The Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders was
established to meet the clinical needs of patients with Polycythemia
Vera (PV), Idiopathic Myelofibrosis (IMF),
Essential Thrombocytosis (ET), Systemic Mastocytosis
(SM) and the Hypereosinophilic Syndrome (HES),
while addressing the mechanisms involved in the causation of these
disorders.
Building on fifty years of clinical experience in the management of
the chronic myeloproliferative disorders within the Hematology Division
at Johns Hopkins, as well as on active basic and clinical research
programs dedicated to these diseases, the Center for the Chronic
Myeloproliferative Disorders provides in one setting comprehensive
consultation for PV, IMF, ET, SM and HES
patients. The consultation begins with an evaluation by a Center
hematologist and involves as necessary collaborating physicians from
the disciplines of Surgery, Dermatology, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology,
Pediatrics, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Transfusion Medicine and
Obstetrics. The intent of the Center is to facilitate access
to all the medical, surgical and laboratory evaluations that patients
may require in order to provide them and their physicians with a consensus
opinion with respect to diagnosis and management.
The chronic myeloproliferative disorders are compatible with substantial
longevity if care is exercised in their management. However, these
disorders are uncommon, not always easy to recognize and there is
no uniformity concerning either their diagnosis or their management.
The mission of the Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders
is to improve the understanding of these unique disorders with respect
to their pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment through basic and clinical
research.
